Fishing Report 29/8/2019

Saltwater

Sand Flathead showed their heads a little bit more along the east coast again, last week – mainly out wide in 50m plus of water. No Tiger flathead this week. Fortescue Bay and Marion Bay saw fish caught.

Australian Salmon are available at Cremorne feeding and transiting the Pipeclay Lagoon mouth, fish up to 2.8kg have been landed with the average around .75kg. The bluffs at South Arm would be a good location choice as well.

Flounder are still available to those braving the rare calm but cold winters nights at the moment. This weekend looks good with settled weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday. Minor flooding in the lower estuaries may lead to clarity issues however anything seaward of a river should be fine.

Perch are available in reasonable numbers throughout Peninsula waters – rocky structure holding winter schools at the moment.

Calamari are returning to shallower water as the southerly swell settles. Now is the time to get the larger than average size fish.

SBT quiet in Peninsula waters this week, the temperature has dropped and water turned a cold green colour after the last bout of snowy weather. Bait was a little scarce as well. Plenty of school sized fish being reported at Pedra in the 20-25kg size range.

Freshwater

Highland reports have been very slim this week due to large snow dumps throughout the entire plateau.

Lake Leake although near empty did fish well last weekend from the shore on both lure and fly – with some nice browns being caught.

Tooms Lake remains quiet and low for the moment and pretty much off limits to boating. Well worth a trip and a spin or fly fish along the shore.

Penstock Lagoon is fishing well … both browns and rainbow trout up to 2 kg in some instances. Shore anglers have done well sight casting unweighted woolly bugger patterns to fish cruising the shallows.  Boat Fishing has been very productive with most anglers doing well fishing teams of 2-3 wet flies on a DI3 sinking line, Flies with UV beads have been most productive.

Great Lake has seen good results by those this week fishing the edges with Galaxia imitations.  Searching with both fly and lure have been equally productive.

Clarence Lagoon has seen large pilgrimages of anglers heading in to target the illusive brook trout, even with such large visitation very few successful reports have filtered through - a few fish have been caught by the persistent angler.

Estuary

Nice sea trout were caught last weekend in the Derwent estuary although conditions were far from ideal. Murky water made fishing tough in both the Huon and Derwent those using bait and soft plastics from the shore seemed to do ok.

One regular customer reported catching a nice 2.5lb “sea runner” near the Tasman bridge fishing the edges with a fly imitating a baitfish similar to a Risely Leech Bugger.

Bream continue to be patchy with a lot of people finding them schooled up in in flowing rivers like Browns River and Jordan River

Rob Green with nice Penstock brown trout last weekend.
