Tasmanian Fishing Report 06/10/23
Freshwater
Note: The Gate to the Western Lakes is now open and so are the rainbow trout waters, offering anglers a range of new waters to fish.
Bronte, Brady’s
Bronte and Brady’s Lake have been fishing Fairly well over the last few weeks. Healthy Brown and rainbow trout have been caught using lures and fly. Bronte Lagoons water levels have been steady over the last week or so giving the trout the opportunity to be feeding in the shallow margins. While Brady’s is producing some lovely rainbow trout due to recent stockings.
Echo
The fishing has been very good of late. Some of the highest Water levels anglers have seen in a long time have made for fantastic fly and lure fishing and some of the healthiest fish and hard fighting fish around. The Road into Large Bay is very good at the moment and anglers have been choosing to launch at the top end of the lake.
Little Pine
Large numbers of fish have been caught, but the fish condition still seems to be rather poor and the average size is very small. Levels are also currently very low and boating is extremely difficult.
Penstock
Penstock has been productive of late the fish have been midging, feeding in the shallows on frogs and the occasional stone fly has been spotted. Fish are in incredible condition with the average size around 4-5lb with bigger been caught.
Arthurs Lake
Good reports have been coming in from a few anglers using fly and lures. The Fish have been healthy and feeding aggressively in the shallow margins of the lake. There seems to be a mixed bag as far as size goes with fish ranging from 1-4lb.
Derwent
The sea-run trout have been fairly good of late. The area upstream of the Bridgewater Bridge has been the most reliable of late. Large schools of Bait have been seen through the area.
Saltwater
Tuna
Still the odd school bluefin tuna about down the South East Coast at the moment, with the weather being the most challenging part for most people. Fish in the 30-50kg bracket are being caught and seen breaking the water at eagle hawk neck.
Squid
Extra Large squid have been caught around the Tasman Peninsula and Bruny Island. The southern calamari is nearing the end of its life cycle so the larger specimens tend to get caught this time of year.
If the water clarity remains good it should continue to fish well.
Australian Salmon
Big numbers of salmon about from small to some larger 2kg fish getting caught around Dover and South Port. The Derwent system and around Bruny Island has been holding a mixed size of late.
Bream
The Derwent and Huon have been fishing well with numbers of fish starting to gather to spawn in the upper reaches. The Swan River is also fishing well with big schools in the upper reaches.
Please don’t forget to send in your pictures so we can share your fantastic catches to info@spotfishinghobart.com.au
Lamprey spawning season in local rivers
If you happen to see dead “eel-like” animals starting to appear around your local rivers, don’t be alarmed.
They are most likely a species of native fish called lamprey which have finished spawning and are at the end of their life cycle. This is a completely natural process which occurs each Spring.
Although eels and lamprey look similar, they are completely unrelated. Eels are a bony fish, while lamprey are cartilaginous, similar to a shark or stingray.
Western Lakes Gate Open
The Parks and Wildlife Service advise the boom gate on Lake Augusta Road has been re-opened for public access as of today (25 September 2023), along with the boom gate to Double Lagoon.
