Freshwater
Atlantic Salmon
With an escape of Atlantic Salmon brings the chance to catch these large healthy fish for yourself.
The escape is said to have occurred at the Hide Away Bay Lease. Anglers have started to catch the fish in both nets and on rod and reel around the bays and estuaries near the lease. The Huon, Esperance and Lune rivers will be fantastic spots to try, with good numbers also starting to be reported throughout the Derwent estuary and channel area. The best method to try would be spinning Silver Metal lures, Wonder Wobblers, soft plastics and anything bright or shinny.
Crescent
The Lake has started to fire with a few fishers being rewarded for their efforts. It’s not an easy lake a day may only result in one or two fish, but you can be assured they will be a very healthy specimen. Larger hard body lures that resemble the Golden Galaxia or a darker colour that casts a decent silhouette in the turbid water are a must.
Penstock
The fish have started to switch on to frog feeding. So, the shallow margins have been very productive as the fish have been aggressively charging at flies like the MkII Wooley Bugger. The deeper section has been a little quiet.
Tyenna River
The river has been producing a stable catch rate for most anglers over the last few weeks. All methods of angling have been successful. Euro Nymphing has been particularly productive with some anglers reporting over 20 to 30 fish caught in a session.
Woods
Still fishing fairly well, Drift spinning has been the best way along the edges of the trees and drop offs.
Derwent River
The Searun and resident fish are still around most of the shores from the lower Derwent around Lindisfarne right up river to Meadowbank Lake. Steady numbers have been reported with some areas fishing better than others. The best way to find the fish is to look for the bait. Lures that have been working well are the Berkley Bronze Pearl T Tail and the Hawk Sniper Ghost Perch.
Arthurs Lake
Is fishing well with a good number of fish in the 2-3lb mark being caught. Soft plastics fished deep in around the trees and trolling the deeper channels have been most productive with a few fly fisherman doing well fishing Mk 11 wooly buggers and Yellow Rabbits in the shallow bays anywhere you can hear frogs.
Salt Water
Australian Salmon
Good numbers of small Australian Salmon have been caught around Dover and the southern estuaries. Larger Fish have started to be caught along the East Coast. Swansea, Orford and Coles Bay have been some good spots over the last week.
Bream
Browns, Huon and the Derwent River have been fishing ok with the odd fish getting caught, this time of year does slow a little for the bream before the water starts to warm and the fish move back along the shores feeding on bait.
Flathead
The odd Sand Flathead have been caught around Norfolk Bay and Marion Bay this should start to improve as the waters warm.
Tuna
Have gone a little quiet the last few weeks, but the odd school Bluefin Tuna is still being caught.
Tuna seems to be here most months of the year now, and for those willing to put the time in have been rewarded.
Calamari
Reasonable numbers of calamari are being caught throughout the Channel area.
Remember to please send in photos of your catches so we can feature your catch.
Two more $2000 tagged caught
West Coast miner Chris 'Scruff' Blair was trolling pink lures on Lake Mackintosh on Sunday afternoon with his 9 year old grandson Khye when they hooked and landed a nice brown trout. Scruff noticed that it had an orange tag with WINNER stamped on it.
Also Rodney Knott planned on fishing the Lake Leake fishing competition between the Launceston and Longford angling clubs on the weekend but he caught a prize a bit bigger than he thought when he landed one of the $2 000 trout from the Tasmanian Tagged Trout Promotion.
