Tasmanian Fishing Report – 14/11/2020

Apologies for a late report this week … this newsletter is a day or so late but this week has been incredibly busy undoubtedly due to the various species which are now fishing well in both the salt and fresh ….

Saltwater

Sand Flathead continue to bite well in deeper ocean waters and further inshore inside coastal bays and estuary systems – allowing anglers to use soft plastics and troll and spin.

Tiger Flathead were going well but have slowed a tad – 50m plus for best results and fresh squid as bait as its tough and will sustain a few bites.

Australian Salmon are biting well, visible schools are now being seen chasing krill and baitfish. Size seems to be around .9kg to 1.3kg. Most areas are holding fish.

Sand Whiting are returning in numbers to inshore shallows around Lewisham and Carlton areas. These fish are also being taken off Cremorne while fishing for flathead.

Silver Trevalley have made an appearance in the south, in Boomer and Blackman Bays – size was around 1kg – anglers used Daiwa Bait Junkie soft plastic spun slowly in the shallows.

Rock Lobster season has gotten off to a great start in the south and west with some nice captures being made in the last couple of weeks. Fish seem to be potting well at Cockle Creek.

East Coast region is set to open on Dec 5th.

Southern Bluefin to 45kg have been captured at Pedra Branca during the week.

Seatrout continue to fish well from the Bowen Bridge in the River Derwent to New Norfolk – small 60mm bibbs and cobra style lures spun and trolled working the best.

Striped Trumpeter although slow to start a few weeks back for some have become a little easier to catch in the last week. Good results have been made micro jigging with Shimano Tiger Baku Baku 120grm and Daiwa Kohga 100grm Octopus jigs. Those dropping baits can mimic the Octo jigs by using Black Magic Snapper Catchers in various colours or their now proven and famous Groper Grabbers.

Calamari are available in most of their usual haunts with Storm Bay and Bruny Island fishing well. Fish on the Peninsula are also available and further up the East Coast.

The Annual East coast Squid closure opens Sunday 15th November, which allows anglers to fish the recently closed waters between Marion Bay and Lemon Rock.

Freshwater

Great Lake continues to fish well to all methods. Trolling and spinning doing really well. And those with the fly are taking their fair share of fish too.

Bronte Lagoon has been patchy depending on the weather, but Greeny took some nice fish there recently on a Strike pro flats minnow 539t.

Arthurs Lake again has been weather dependent but some aggressive fish can be found on the windy rocky shores.

Woods Lake - Still fishing well but tough on bright days. A few fish have been coming up to the dry though.

Derwent River - Fishing well with a few fish falling to the Tassie Devil MOJO20 around Bushy Park.

A nice Great Lake Brown from Tods Corner on Strike pro flats minnow 539t.

Jimmy Johnston landed this cracking Derwent fish on the MOJO20.

Marcus Saunders with the best fish of the day from Arthurs.
