Tasmanian Fishing Report 16/03/2022

Be swift if you want to catch some Tailor!

Saltwater

Kingfish
Have been patchy with dedicated anglers still managing to find the odd fish. Some anglers reporting fish being caught while targeting tuna around the Hippolyte rocks.

Flathead
Have been reported to be fishing well with good size sand flathead around the Channel, Dodges and Dunalley.

Bream
The ABT Round hits the Derwent this Friday and Saturday (18th – 19th March), as promised in last week’s report if you would like to go and watch the weigh in, you can catch the action from 2pm on both days at the Bellerive Yacht Club.

Good numbers of fish are still present throughout the Derwent.

Tuna
Tuna have been caught all through the Southern East Coast. Good Bluefin and Albacore are still reported to have been caught in decent numbers.  A few reports have come in of seeing Striped Marlin out of Eagle Hawk Neck. The Tuna should only get better in the coming weeks.

Australian Salmon
Salmon have moved well and truly into most estuary systems from small specimens to two to three kilos.

Tailor
There has been good sized Tailor mixed in with salmon schools in the lower Derwent system and East Coast.

Snapper
Betsy Island has started to produce the occasional larger sized Snapper, while smaller Pinkies have been caught throughout the Derwent system. This should only get better in the coming weeks with cooler water temperatures.

Calamari
The humble squid is really starting to fire up with some excellent specimens being reported in Port Arthur, Fortescue Bay and the lower Derwent.

Mackerel
Large schools have been sighted throughout most bays and estuaries along the East Coast of Tasmania for quite some time. They have been quite large and are a hugely underrated sports fish.

Freshwater

Great Lake
The lure anglers have been doing very well targeting deeper fish on the troll and drift spinning.

Bronte Lagoon
Has started to fish well with the lure and fly fisher doing well.

Dee Lagoon
The Dee has been on fire the last few weeks with good beetle hatches finally arriving and the fish feeding hard.

Rivers
Most rivers have started to fish well again with fresh flows and higher levels being reported after the good rainfalls.

Some better Calamari are starting to show up in the SE.
