Tasmanian Fishing Report May 2024

Swordfish caught out of Eaglehawk Neck, approx. 80-90kg.

Fishing Report

Swordfish

Have slowed over the last few weeks after the good run during the Sword Fish Comps likely due to weather and less people going. A couple of good fish were caught out of eaglehawk on the weekend.

Bream

The East Coast and Derwent have fished fairly well over the last week, The Derwent fish are being found in the middle sections and up around Lime Kilns. Fly anglers have been very productive around Otago Bay on Martins Minnows and Bream Bunnies.

Tuna

The Bluefin fishing has been excellent over the last week, Anglers reporting the East Coast, Cape Raoul, Tasman Island, South Bruny and Pedra have been standout spots with good quantities of fish. School tuna around the 20kg mark is the most common but plenty of the larger models have also been caught. Schools have been seen breaking the surface feeding with some anglers doing well on surface lures.

Australian Salmon

The salmon have been widely reported, along the east coast and Derwent estuary. Some big fish were caught off Pirates Bay over the weekend.

Deep Dropping

Reports of good table fish such as Blue Eye, Ling and Gem fish have been caught on the east coast Maria Island and north.

Snapper

The Snapper fishing has been fantastic. Good numbers of smaller fish to 40cm and the odd larger to 70cm have been caught around Betsy Island, Norfolk Bay and around Adventure Bay.

Calamari

The East Coast has produced fantastic sized squid over the last week. The bays around Southern Maria, Bruny and in the Channel have all fished well.

Mackerel

The Mackerel haven’t stopped over the last few months and don’t appear to be going anywhere any time soon..

Freshwater

Derwent River

Smaller Searun Trout have been reported in the Derwent mostly as a by-catch to people chasing bream.

Great Lake

This has continued to fish well over the last week, with trout getting caught close to shore and on fly and lures over the last week. Todds Corner has been a great spot with both healthy Brown and Rainbow Trout caught. Be aware of low water levels and boat ramps being hard to use.

Dee Lagoon

Has been fishing well for both the lure and fly angler. The fish have been in good condition. Station Bay and around Mentmore Bay have been fairly productive.

Please don’t forget to send in your pictures so we can share your fantastic catches to info@spotonfishinghobart.com.au
