Weekly News 9/4/2020
This Easter’s fishing exploits looks as though they will be fairly low key …. with the message from most to stay at home ….“Stay home stay safe “but if you need to go for a fish …..there are options available.
An email from DPIWE on Wednesday 8th of April said the following:

How Far Can I travel to fish?
“You must return to your primary place of residence the same day you depart to go fishing. Staying at Shacks or camping is not permitted “
Restrictions on where recreational boaters may launch from will be in place this holiday period.
If you own a boat, you will be restricted to launching within the municipality within which your primary residential address is listed for the purposes of the stay at home restrictions.
These restrictions will be in place from Wednesday 8 April until Monday 27 April 2020 and may be extended “
Can I Go Camping as Part of My Recreational Fishing Activity?
No. Parks, Reserves and Campgrounds are closed – see the Parks and Wildlife website for more information. You must return to your primary residence the same day.
How Many People Can I go Fishing With?
A rule of two persons applies to all gatherings, except for gatherings of household members or members of a custody or guardianship arrangement.
What Procedures Should I put in Place When I GO Fishing?
You should consider first is it essential.
Anglers should maintain personal hygiene practices washing hands or using an alchol based hand sanitiser, coughing or sneezing into a tissue, or flexed elbow if a tissue is not available, and staying at least 1.5m apart.
Avoid stopping at places such as retail or hospitality outlets and public toilets on the way to and from the fishing location if possible. “

Species in Profile
Albacore Tuna (Thunnus alalonga)
Albacore tuna are a warm open water (17oC plus) tuna usually arriving off Tasmania’s upper east coast in late Dec/Jan each year… extending further south around late February, March and April … albacore average around 3- 8kg with large specimens being 15 – 22kg.
CSIRO a few years back looked at our albacore and gauged from a few of the samples dropped off to them that adult fish were spawning quite close by as a few fish were under conditioned.
As anglers we and chrome jet head squid, bibbed minnow or Halco Max styled trolled behind the boat will take albacore – try using brighter pinks and chartreuses on these fish as opposed to more subdued colours for SBT.
Albacore at the height of summer and early autumn can be caught well inshore and the 100m line is always a favourite for most. In the SE the Hippolyte Rocks can be a good starting point. Late in the season around May sees water cooling and the larger Adult fish being more cold tolerating turn up in close … these fish can range up to 30kg and will give anglers a major tussle.
