Fishing Report 07/08/2020
Saltwater
Southern Bluefin tuna
Are still biting well for The Friars through to St Helens. Average size seems to still be around the 15kg mark …. Although a Charter operator in the Maria area reported two fish last weekend to 40kg.
Squid
Big calamari continue to be caught throughout the Coles Bay area and around the east coast with specimens reaching up to 50cm hoods.
Scallops
Divers brave enough to brave the cold water are getting good numbers of large scallops.
Freshwater
Bronte Lagoon
Was busy last weekend with around 30 boats on the water and many more anglers around the shores, despite the pressure this water fished well. Scott Grey from Tillins and his party landed 52 for the weekend all on the new 43, 44, 45 and 46 Ashley 2 Inch Ashley spinner and anti - kink. All fish seemed to be in excellent condition and around 1- 1.3kg.
Little Pine
Fished well for opening weekend; conditions were extremely tough with strong winds ripping down the lake but the rewards were there for the persistent angler.
Great Lake
Saw anglers seek shelter in Todds Corner and Swan Bay as the wind built during Saturday, both shore based and boat anglers doing well. Fish being caught on soft plastics out deep while further inshore spinners and the wet fly working well.
Arthurs Lake
Proved tough and patchy over the opening weekend with some anglers finding patches of good fish while the majority struggled. It seemed as though the wet fly worked the best flicked around the edges. Trolling and spinning very touch and go.
River Derwent
Was patchy at best although some good fish were caught … the best was 10lb sea run trout form the upper reaches, taken spinning out through the weeds and rushes, from between the “speed way” and New Norfolk…. Surprisingly these fish were caught on the Tillins Ashley 2Inch PH – Phantom lure. A few fish were also encountered south of Bridgewater. One theory on the quietness of the river was a dropping barometer prior to the big snows and weather event of Monday and Tuesday.
