Fishing Report 1/11/2019

Saltwater

Sand Flathead - were caught in good numbers last weekend throughout the SE. Peninsula waters with good fish caught off White Beach in recent days.

A newcomer to the report this week is the Silver Warehou which are being taken in good numbers from jetties throughout the Derwent River. These fish are related to the Blue Warehou and are sometimes mistaken as such. These fish respond well to chicken pieces and blue bait. A little bit of burley helps as well with an unweighted hook rig allowed to sink naturally to just out of sight of the angler.

Snapper continue to bite throughout Storm Bay and Bruny Island area. Burley is key to success.

The Closure for Striped Trumpeter ceases today 1 / 11 / 2019 and these fish are now available.

The Southern Rock lobster …. Or Crayfish season opens tomorrow 2/11/2019 outside of the East Coast Stock Rebuilding Zone. Please remember no pots in the water before 1pm and not checked until midnight. Please see the below link for open areas and make sure to double check your rules:

Tiger flathead - are still a little quiet but should fire up in the next week or so. Try for these while chasing Striped Trumpeter. Minimum 50m of water.

Calamari are fishing well off nearly every coastal jetty at the moment. Please note there is an East Coast closure in place so make sure to check your rules.

Rumours this week of a jumbo Southern Bluefin Tuna hooked and lost of Eagle Hawk Neck on Wednesday.

The Derwent and Huon estuary still have large populations of Bream smashing bait at the mouths of creeks and tidal bays. Daiwa 60mm Presso lures in Brown Suji Shrimp, Rainbow and Iwana working well.

Many anglers are enjoying the early run of Australian Salmon with most fish averaging 1kg. Gillies Pilchard and Baitfish 20grm lures working well.

Freshwater

Arthurs Lake – reports are flowing in of people getting good bags of fish in the 3-5lb category on both lure and Dry Fly.  The water is a lot clearer than previous years and fish have been found cruising around the edges and hanging deep on the weed beds. Soft plastic drop shot minnows have been very productive.

Lake St Clair is a real gem, Wednesday saw large numbers of Gum Beetles hitting the surface and a small amount of fish activity on these flies. Lure fishing has been average but good fish up to 1kg are being caught – both browns and rainbows.

Echo Lake - fishing has been good up the top end around Large Bay and Teal Bay.  Lure fisherman have been doing well spinning shallow running Jazz 70mm minnows while fly fisherman have been doing well on mayflies and gum beetles.

Lake Catagunya - good number of fish been caught drift spinning and trolling in the upper reaches.

Silver Warehou caught in the Derwent estuary this week…. minimum size 250mm and 10 Warehou species combined daily bag limit.
