Fishing Report 13/9/2019

Saltwater

Flathead
Have very few reports this week due to windy weather, a few did filter through from further up the east coast around Nth Maria, Freycinet and Bicheno.

Australian Salmon
Now in the Derwent and Huon Rivers not overly big in size at around .5kg but still offering a good afternoon sport fishing.

Mullet
Good size mullet getting around the SE coastline captures have been made at Sth Arm and Opossum Bay. Rumours from Dover as well. Add tuna oil and breadcrumbs as burley for added attraction.

Calamari
A little quiet this week again due to big southerly and easterly swells. These squid should move int the shallows again as this weather abates. Deep water fishing may be productive as this is where these fish will seek refuge. Blackmans Bay may be worth a try as its predominantly sheltered from the rougher weather.

Sand Whiting
A little quiet in the Derwent river due to increased levels of freshwater this week but still plenty being caught further down in the salt around Iron Pot and Betsy Island. Reports from Marion Bay have come through too.

Bluefin Tuna
Are still about with fish being again caught this week around Bicheno and Nth Maria. Reports from other areas have not been received.

Perch
Reported from Hellfire Bluff north west of Marion Bay and in the vicinity of The Thumbs at Eagle Hawk Neck and Fortescue Bays.

Couta
Were abundant in the lower to mid reaches of Derwent with good schools being encountered around the Alum Cliffs south of Taroona.

Sea trout and Bream fisherman encountering feisty fish further upstream as well … this is another sign that significant amounts of bait have entered southern rivers. Small couta themselves being bait to large sea trout and their larger cannibalistic brethren.   

Garfish
Were available at Lewisham this week with only a few reports coming through … customers that went certainly caught fish.

Sea Trout
seem to be quite active at the moment …. This may have something to do with the arrival of various bait species in the last fortnight including small pockets of white bait. All stretches of the Derwent and Huon Rivers producing fish to bait, spin, troll and fly.

Freshwater

The pick of the bunch this week are Penstock and Woods Lake with good catches continuing to be made at Penstock on the fly and the action kicking off well for the season on Woods. Woods has produced nice fish to spin, troll and fly.

Great Lake has been very productive of late with fish already starting to take midge from the surface on nicer days.  Anglers are still getting good bags drift spinning the lake edges with a good mixture of rainbows and browns around the 1-2kg mark making up most people’s bags. 

A lovely highland trout caught in average conditions chasing galaxia in the waves.
