Fishing Report 18/10/2019
Saltwater
Flathead
bit well last weekend … fish were taken by drifting and spinning hard body bibbed lures and soft plastics. Good bags were taken throughout the SE.
Calamari
have seasonal closures in place (see here https://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/sea-fishing-aquaculture/recreational-fishing/area-restrictions/calamari-closure-area ).
The good news being they have run well outside these areas. Calamari can now be found in pretty much all south eastern waters and throughout the channel and Dover areas.
Snapper
have now been caught wide in Storm Bay …. The good weather allowing anglers to get out and try for this species. Broken bottom is key to a good day on these fish.
Sand Whiting
have been taken around Lewisham and Seven Mile Beach area … some of these fish have been approaching 250mm. Small squid pieces and mussels the best bait. These fish have been taken from both the pier and boat.
Australian Salmon
still going well, the best spots this week being Cremorne, Kangaroo Bluff and Pidgeon Holes at South Arm. Big schools have been encountered busting up by boaters. Fish in and around the Derwent and Channel have nudged 1.5kg.
Short Finned Pike
and Snook have both been encountered amongst the salmon nearly always over a rocky reef bottom.
Tiger Flathead
Still relatively quiet … although the upper east coast around Bicheno did produce good sized 5-600mm fish earlier in the week.
Settled weather last week saw anglers get out of a night for Flounder. These fish although not in huge numbers were prevalent and with a little bit of effort a feed obtained.
Bream
still a little quiet but the larger estuaries offering larger fish for the persistent angler.
Seatrout
although reported last week to be rather non existent did go well last weekend and during the early part of the week. Baitfish is now said to be in reasonable concentrations throughout the middle reaches of the Derwent and Huon Rivers.
Freshwater
Great Lake
is producing some wonderful fish …. Both browns and rainbows have fallen this week to lure, bait and fly. Tuesday morning was an absolute cracker in the highlands and saw 4-5 boats fishing the Swan Bay area. Tasmanian Devil BR and No 50 working well.
Woods Lake
saw an Inter Club Challenge run last weekend between local freshwater angling clubs with close to 300 trout caught for the two day event. This lake has just started to produce consistent results with the wet and dry fly. Beetle falls have also been seen. And a wet fly flicked from shore or a drifting boat close in shore has seen better fish taken.
Penstock Lagoon
again has seen trout working well on both the wet and the dry fly. Quality angling followed the rougher weather of a few weeks back and has not let up. Reports of Fish taking Stonefly on top on warmer days.
King William
has featured a bit in recent days with reports of successful trips filtering through. This lake although a little slow to start this year due to cold water from snow melt seems to have come on line and is expected to fire over coming months.
