Fishing Report – 18 June 2021

Easterly weather systems persist but calmer conditions are forecast for the weekend.

Saltwater

Sand Flathead – have started to pick up in the last week with good numbers of fish starting to be caught. This may be the last chance before this species goes into a semi hibernation for winter.

Marion Bay has traditionally produced good numbers of fish during winter.

Mullet are present in the Derwent River.  A bit a burley to bring them in and some bread soaked in fish oil as bait should result in good catches. Catch these before winter flooding makes them hard to find.

Calamari are in reasonable numbers and are going well around Bruny Island and the outside of Maria Island. Betsy Island was producing good fish recently.

Both medium and small sized Barracouta are back this year and have been pretty thick.

Adult fish have been encountered this week around Southport and the Acteons.

Australian Salmon have been very slow.

“Cockies “have been encountered at Cremorne and along the South Arm beaches including South Arm itself and Opossum Bay.

Striped Trumpeter did fish well over the last weekend. South of Bruny Island seemed to do better than further north around the Tasman Peninsula.

Southern Bluefin have been highly active at Eagle Hawk Neck - colder water and a lack. Plenty of school fish and bigger available at Pedra Blanca and further to the north around eastern Maria Island. 100kg plus fish have gone a little quiet – one fish around 80kg being caught earlier in the week.

Sand Whiting have been caught in the Derwent off Little Howrah and further downriver at Opossum Bay and Lewisham – these may be a little slow after the rain.

Good Flounder have been speared during the week reports indicate the water is not too discoloured. This may have changed after Thursday’s rain.

Estuary

Seatrout to 2.3kg are available and taking lure and fly readily in the Derwent and Huon estuaries. Maiden fish of around .3 to .6kg have dominated bags as is normally the case for this time of the year.

Bream continue to be caught in various tidal inflows like Browns River near Kingston and the Jordan and Huon rivers in the South.

Taylor were biting well before last weeks rain. Good spots to try are along the Tranmere and Tasman bridge areas or further up around Old Beach and Granton.

Silver Trevally may suffer a little with the freshwater but were responding well to burly around the local jetties particularly Battery Point, South Arm and Dru Point.

Freshwater

This last week of rain has been very good for all of our lakes and rivers with streams and inflows into lakes running well.

Great Lake has been fishing really well on bait with fishers choosing to use scrub worms of a night or during the day.  Good browns and the occasional rainbow are still being caught by anglers spinning and fly fishing the shore. Boaters also catching fish flat lining with Cobra lures. Rug up it has been cool.

Tooms Lake is spilling and although this water can’t be fished until the opening of the Brown Trout season in August – this news bodes well for the new season. (See photo kindly supplied by Pat Conway).

Good luck this weekend!

A recently caught school sized SBT with a Halco Laser Pro 190 XDD in its mouth after marking the school on the fishfinder at approximately 5m – the colour is H89 or Lumo.

One of our many orders on Halco Laser Pro 190 XDD we have done this year – the colour is R19 or Psychedelic Pink Head – the advantage of the XDD series is its 6m diving capability for Tuna on bright days.

Tooms Lake spilling last Monday after the big wet weekend, a further 40mm last night will see an even higher spill this weekend. Photo courtesy, Pat Conway.
