Tas Fishing Report 10/6/21

With a long weekend looming solid saltwater action around our coastlines continues with quality SBT captures keeping anglers entertained ….

Saltwater

SBT continue their run on the SE, E and NW coastlines. Fish at Table Cape have been hooked against the shore at the base of the lookout – some of these tuna have been 80 – 100kg.

Tuna have been caught in all known locations this week including St Helens, Bicheno, Freycinet, Eaglehawk Neck, Fortescue Bay and Bruny Island – with the whole eastern coastline seemingly alive with 15 – 23kg tuna. Larger fish to 100kg are being encountered at times too.

The Halco Laser Pro 190DD in colour R9 Coral Trout being the standout these past 7 days.

Sand Flathead bit well in certain locations last weekend which is a bit unusual. Successful fishers being those that were prepared to try a few different locations in order to catch their fish.

Some superbly calm nights last week saw anglers spearing some nice Flounder around the lower Derwent and South Arm area. Further afield saw anglers taking fish throughout “the Channel” and Lewisham areas.

Tailor have again been caught in the Derwent River with some fish up to 40cm and more than a handful on lighter 2-4kg spin gear more suited to trout and bream.  Kangaroo Bay in the Derwent has been holding these larger fish.

Sand Whiting have been taken at Opossum Bay and Pidgeon Holes area. Also at Dover off the jetty and by anglers chasing flathead off Cremorne.

Snapper are slowing a little but are still around in reasonable numbers. These fish were a little slow to start for the season and this may mean they will continue to run in Storm Bay and other reefy areas well into winter.

Calamari are going well in the Mercury Passage, Marion Bay, Port Arthur Bay and Nubeena areas.

Yamashita 490 Glo jigs in colour 047 – Purple working well.

Silver Warehou continue to be encountered around coastal jetties in the south.

Australian Salmon to 1kg at Cremorne and around South Arm in the last week. Adventure Bay seeing some fish to 1.6kg taken surf fishing along the back of the surf break.

Estuary

Bream are still around in good numbers further upstream from Old Beach to Granton. The fish are hitting an assortment of bibbed minnows – Strike Pro Flatz Minnows in Cols : A53, A142-264 and 539T or along deeper shores Strike Pro Bass X Col: 882G and 128VS.

Sea Trout have really become abundant in the last week with some great captures being made from the Tasman Bridge to New Norfolk (remember above the Bridgewater Bridge a current Freshwater Fishing Licence is required). All methods of bait, lure and fly are working well. In fact many seatrout have been taken with the Strike Pro lures above as sea trout are feeding on the same bait the bream are at the moment. See photo of a superb Derwent Searun trout caught on fly earlier in the week.

Freshwater

Lake King William has seen anglers catching fish on small cobra lures. The trick in this lake is the brighter and flashier the better. Trolling and spinning doing well.

Lake Pedder sees a competition being held there this weekend. Lake Pedder Anglers Club is having their annual “Winter at Pedder Competition “, we look forward to seeing results over the weekend. This water

Great Lake when weather permits is producing both rainbows and browns to both lure and fly. Soaking scrub worms during the day close to shore also producing fish. Ashley 14B in either the 1.5 or 2 Inch lure taking fish along the shore in the wind last week.

Finlay Ellerton with a nice little searunner caught from the MONA area last weekend.

The fish was taken on a quite a big grey rabbit fur zonker.

Tasmanian Fly Tyers Club Beginners Sessions

The Tasmanian Fly Tyers Club is running a beginners session on Sat July 10 at the Lenah Valley RSL.

This is a great opportunity to get expert tuition in relation to beginning to Fly Tie with a team of well respected and seasoned fly tyers and fly fishers.

Herne Lodge – Fly Fishing Clinics

During the last trout fishing season, as part of their response to the Covid pandemic, three trout guides - Roger Butler (Red Tag Trout Tours), Ken Orr (Orrsome Adventures) and Nick May (The Highland Fly) ran a series of introductory fly fish days at Herne Lodge up in the Central Highlands. Over the season they ran 5 session with a total attendance of 46 anglers.

Herne proved to be a great venue - exclusive access to a private fishery offering wild brown trout in a fantastic setting.  Some anglers enrolled more than once, some added  family members and, fantastically, almost half our participants were women. And some finished up with some great giveaways - including vouchers from the Fishing Connection.

The program was so successful that the guys are intending to run the program again through the 21-22 season, starting in September and running one each month. Look out for flyers in store soon!
