Fishing Report – 3rd June 2021

Saltwater

King George whiting have been encountered along the NE coastline and Freycinet area.

Snapper continue to bite well in Storm Bay.

Albacore tuna although quiet in SE waters were caught amongst SBT off Bicheno and Freycinet last week.

Southern Bluefin tuna are available in the NW off Table Cape where fish to 115kg have been taken and along the entire south and east coasts. Tasman Peninsula waters continue to fish well with the fish size seeming to be around 10-15kg. Larger 20 – 25kg fish are mixed in.

Sand Flathead are tapering off in most areas as water temps plummet to 13 degrees C.

Silver Warehou are now being taken from coastal jetties in the SE – size is ranging .5kg to 1kg.

Flounder are plentiful along the SE and E coastlines on a calm night – both wading and those spearing from a dinghy working well.

Garfish are around in force throughout the SE inshore coastal bays and jetties. The quality of fish caught is exceptional and is typical of the larger winter size we are use to.

Estuary

Sea Run trout are active around the Old Beach area, Stores Point and Cadbury Point. Many of the popular 60-70mm bibbed minnows mimicking the last of the summer bait left in the river. Fly anglers are experiencing success as well.

Bream are also very widespread through the Derwent estuary. Cornelian Bay would be a good starting point for anglers chasing these fish with lure and fly in the shallows.

Freshwater

Craigebourne Dam close to Richmond has seen Atlantic Salmon to 1.8kg released in recent days which is not too far behind the release of 800 1-1.5kg brown trout a few weeks back.

Lake Pedder has been fishing well to trolled and spun lures and has been producing quality brown trout in recent weeks. Some super mild and calm days have been experienced by anglers particularly during stints of easterly weather.

Great Lake has seen brown trout return from an early spawning run and are eager to hit lures and flies as they start to focus on the Great Lake Galaxia that is about to spawn over the rocky shorelines in this water. Fish size for the moment seems to be around the .95kg to 1.1kg. Trollers have done well working the shorelines with a 13.5grm Tasmanian Devil in BR (Bloody Ripper), while shore based anglers have achieved similar results spinning with a Tillins Ashley in Col 23 or 14D.

Thomas and Ellie with one of a few SBT they caught last Sunday in the Fortescue Bay area.

A very happy angler Patrick east of Maria this week with a good sized school SBT.

Oscar Campbell with a Blue from Tasman.
