Fishing Report – 27 May 2021

In the last week Tuna action keeps anglers happy along the entire east coast ….

Saltwater

Silver Warehou – rumours of smaller Warehou being caught from Betsy island up to the Tasman Bridge on small unweighted baits drifted down through the water column – with prawns proving most effective.

Tailor – reasonable numbers of good size tailor are being caught throughout the Derwent at the moment on silver slices in the 15-30g range.

Bream – the river is full of small bream at the moment with people reporting huge numbers being caught on both fly and lure.

Cod – inshore reefs continue to be plagued by Cod with people chasing snapper/striped trumpeter reporting abnormally high catch rates.

Mullet – big schools of mullet are cruising the estuaries at the moment fresh burley and bread covered in tuna oil on a small hook being the preferred method of catching these fish.

Sea trout – reports of good numbers of small sea runners are still flowing in from lower Sandy Bay up to Bridgewater bridge. Any form of small baitfish pattern is working with our favorite being the presso 6f lures.

Tuna – Bluefin continue to be thick everywhere with reports of good numbers throughout
Storm bay, Dart Bank, Tasman Island and Maria Island. Bigger fish to 115kg have been taken in recent days with healthy numbers of 50 – 70kg fish mixed in. The average still seems to be around 20kg.

Sand Flathead are continuing to attack baits lure and fly in most areas – size is up a little as per usual for autumn.

Garfish are in healthy numbers for this time of the year – Lewisham being a key area. A little bit of burley will work well for these fish.

Freshwater

Trout are a little quiet this week owing to average weather and winds that have not been conducive to highlands fishing. As noted above sea run trout are hitting lures in the larger estuaries. Great Lake was fishing well a week or so back with some fantastic rainbow trout being reported.

The weather is looking mint for this up coming weekend after the scuddy fronts of Thursday and Friday disappear.
