Tasmanian Fishing Report 17th May 2021

Bream – are firing in the Derwent estuary with large numbers of fish being caught on hardbodies and flies.  These are a great winter target over the next couple of months

Estuary Trout – big numbers of smaller estuary trout are being caught throughout the Derwent river at the moment, these fish are happily snapping at any baitfish pattern around 60-70mm long.

Winter Rainbows – reports of good-sized rainbows being caught in Dee Lagoon and Great lake are firing anglers up to brave the cold and get in another trip to the highlands before the rainbow waters close.  Lures seems to be the most popular method of chasing these fish with both trolling and drift spinning working well.  

Craigbourne Dam – has been re-opened and recently stocked.  Anglers are reporting good

Bluefin Tuna – continue to fire all around the state with reports of tuna being caught at Dart bank, Friars, North Bruny, Pedra, Eagle Hawk neck, North and South Maria, Schouten, Bicheno and St Helens.  Halco laser pros and Fat boys continue to be lures of choice on school bluefin.  While JB and Meridian seem to accounting for a lot of the larger specimens.

Flathead – Reports of good-sized flathead being caught in stormy bay and Frederick henry bay in around 15m of water with fish well over the legal size being caught.

Calamari – continue to fire up the east coast around maria and Coles bay with good numbers of large squid being caught.
