Fishing Report 18/03/2021
Saltwater
Slimy Mackeral are available of many of the coastal jetties around southeast Tasmania. These are also an indication of warmer water and the potential for Striped Marlin, Yellowfin and Striped tuna off our wider coastline.
Calamari are beginning to return to many of our shorelines with both shore based anglers and boaters reporting good captures of late.
Rock Lobster are still potting well although late in the season now. Remember approximately 1 month remains to target this specie.
Albacore continue to run well off Dart Bank in Storm Bay and the wider Peninsula. Fish seem to be moving between Tasman Island and the Dart – this can vary from day to day.
Southern Bluefin seem to be reasonably consistent around Tasman Island.
Sand flathead are still on the chew with bait lure and fly working well.
No Reports of Tiger flathead this week.
Makos are still being taken from Bicheno to EHN …. Fish to 130kg reported this week.
Australian Salmon are patchy in the River Derwent but fairly plentiful around South Arm and the Iron Pot. Fish have been caught at Cremorne as well. Large schools of salmon have been seen around the east coast from eaglehawk neck upwards with fish ranging up to 3kg.
Garfish have surprised everyone this week with the autumn run having started. The channel received favourable reports of good bags and size.
Kingfish have eluded anglers in the Derwent around the Tasman Bridge but have been taken further south around Sandy Bay. Northwest Bay is still producing fish – soft plastics being the lure of choice for many.
Snapper are now out and about we have heard reports this week from Blackmans Bay, Alonnah, Storm Bay and the Peninsula in various locations. The snapper up until this point have been hugging inshore areas but seem to have made a run for deeper waters in the last 7 days.
Freshwater
Great Lake continues to fire … all methods working well although the dry fly fishing is still a little quiet.
Woods Lake should be starting to produce fish as water cools and trout become more active in the final weeks of the season. Weed should also be beginning to die off and not be such a problem for troll anglers.
Penstock Lagoon is producing good trout but fishing is tough … the wet fly again is the key or perhaps a nicely presented Jassid beetle.
Tungatinah Lagoon reportedly fishing well over the last week as well – bait fishers and trollers doing well.
