Fishing Report – 26th March 2021

Early autumn action in both the fresh and salt was encountered throughout the last week for many fishers who got out before the big wet!

Saltwater

Albacore have slowed a little but Cape Pillar, Cape Roule and Tasman Island… have fish to 30kg still being caught, smaller 8-10kg fish are in the vicinity of The Hippolyte’s. This morning another nice fish to 60kg landed.

Striped Tuna have arrived in force around Bicheno with a few down off the Peninsula.

Southern Bluefin have seen 80kg fish caught at Tasman Island during the week… these may be the same fish from Dart Bank a couple of weeks back.

Snapper are all throughout Storm Bay with anglers picking reefy structure for a burley session – size seems to be around 40cm or 2.5kg.

Yellowtail Kingfish - North West Bay producing numbers again this week with most other renown areas seeing their share of the action as well. The River Derwent may quieten off for a few days after the rain but should bounce back after freshwater clears.

Sea Trout are making an appearance in the Derwent and Huon estuaries – with fish being taken spinning and trolling mainly in the lower reaches.

Atlantic Salmon are still available in the Huon estuary mainly around the rapids – size ranges but most are still around 4kg.

Bream continue to fire in the lower Derwent estuary. Fly anglers doing really well of late.

Sand Whiting are around in numbers and being caught off nearly every jetty in southern Tasmania – South Arm and Lewisham area fishing well for the moment. These areas may be affected by the fresh for a few days.

Calamari are returning for autumn; freshwater has stopped a rather good bite in recent days.

Small to medium sized Couta are prevalent around the SE coastline – trolling and spinning accounting for most fish. Adult Couta are still relatively scarce but have been encountered on occasion.

An influx of Mako Shark in the last week has seen a scurry of fishing activity off the peninsula – a lot fish are coming in at 80 – 100kg .

Freshwater

Great Lake is still producing nice browns and rainbow trout to 2.3kg. Troll and spin seeming to be the best option. Fly is a little quiet.

Lake Leake has begun to fish well again just in time to see some good fishing to finish the season in a month’s time. Again, spin and troll working well.

Bronte Lagoon has produced fish to the fly during this past week a few of the days being text book Jassid beetle fishing. Troll and spin fishers taking fish as well.

Arthurs Lake is being particularly tough on the lure fishers but producing the odd fish to the fly- woolley bugger patterns in close producing fish.

Good luck this week!

Jack Gard with a nice 172cm – 86kg SBT caught earlier in the week at Tasman Island.
