Fishing Report 24/9/2020

Windy weather last weekend made fishing tricky …. Thankfully by Sunday the rougher conditions had started to ease, affording anglers both salt and fresh a chance to save their days off….

Saltwater

SquidCalamari have been going really well the last week with anglers reporting good sized squid being caught from Maria and Bruny Island.

Sand flathead have been taking baits well over the last week in deeper water with some quality 500mm fish being caught.

Tiger Flathead have been available in deeper water north of Maria Island.

Sand whiting – continue to fish well in southern beaches, estuaries and bays.

Southern Bluefin have gone very quiet the last week with no real reports of captures coming to hand. It may still be worth a trip as focus now by the majority of anglers is for the time being turning toward trout and freshwater leaving peninsula waters devoid of boats.

Freshwater

Brown Trout – the lakes are firing with all the highland lakes proving to be very productive at the moment.  Arthurs has been producing some great quality trout for both spin and fly fisherman with most angles finding fish fairly close to the shore.

Rainbow Trout have just begun their spawning run for the year.

The Derwent River saw a few good sea runners caught throughout the estuary system. The true Tasmanian whitebait or Lovettia Seali – the first to appear each season, have excited trout around the edges.  One capture last week, of a fish around 1kg, has seen on closer inspection while removing the hooks freshly eaten white bait in the mouth of the fish. The Huon River has been in comparison quiet.

Again, last weekend in the highlands was pretty average with some wild weather over Saturday with much of this easing over Sunday.

Penstock Lagoon fished well as it is a little lower and more sheltered than some of the higher alternatives.

Toom’s Lake fished well last weekend to both spin and fly…  fish have been seen chasing galaxias in the shallows.

Great Lake produced fish in Todds Corner and Swan Bay – the 7grm Tasmanian Devil in Colour 121 – Pinky producing fish as did the Ashley, in either size, in 14D (Green and Gold / Red Dots) and 29 (Black and Gold/Red Dots).

Local female angling identity Shauna Picken’s beautiful sea run trout caught from the Derwent last weekend.

Shauna’s sea run trout and its mouthful of  super fresh white bait discovered while removing the hooks.

The story gets better ALL  these whitebait were eventually pulled from the mouth of her sea run trout …. To an angler this means one thing – the Derwent and Huon Rivers are about to fire!
