Fishing Report

Saltwater

Southern Bluefin
Storm Bay, Eaglehawk Neck, Pedra Blanca. Schoolies are available on the Peninsula with Stuart Nicholls of Personalised Sea Charters boating a 101kg jumbo mid last week. Fish size seems to increase the further south anglers venture with the fish at Pedra nudging 40kg or so.

A Report by the Tuna Club of Tasmania, President during the week had Steve personally seeing a large school feeding and jumping about 2Nm seaward of Variety Bay in larger Storm Bay. SBT it seems are within reach of anglers launching at South Arm and Tinderbox. This may also indicate a trip to Dart Bank is in order for those at White Beach and Nubeena.

Sea Trout
are in good numbers as they begin to make their way upriver to spawn good in the River Derwent and most probably the Huon River as well.

Australian Salmon
are in good numbers in most areas with fish size being around the .5kg to 1.3kg.

Albacore
were in close around the Hippolyte’s not so much Tasman Island. Try the rock first and if need be head further afield. Albacore have been caught as far south as Mewstone and Pedra and of a really good size at 4-8kg.

Kingfish
are a little slow although a good capture was made in the Maria region during the week.

Flounder
starting to move and nights are becoming settled. Anglers can be on the water and off by 10.30pm with a good feed. Rising tide for best results.

Snapper
are biting well in Storm Bay over rocky bottom. Burley a little bit for best results.

Calamari
are a little quiet at the moment but should be available at Margate and South Port.

Freshwater

Woods Lake

is fishing well at the moment to all methods – trollers are finding the going a bit patchy in relation to avoiding the remaining strings of weed that are near the surface but good water can be found and those fish that have been caught have been in good condition. Spin and Fly fishers have done well drifting or stalking the edges near the river mouth. Rumours have the odd Jassid feeder taking the fly well over the last week or so.

Great Lake

continues to fish well as it has done from the very first week of the season this year …. Fish are in fantastic condition as they prepare to spawn for the year. One rainbow we heard about nudged 2.2kg and was caught trolling an S12 Dual Depth Tassie Devil.

The Great Lake shop is now offering some great take away specials and combo deals as part of their “ winter warmer “ takeaway – new this week Cup of Soup or Winter Stew $6

Social Distancing and Fishing

Please be safe with your fishing ventures at the moment and mindful of Govt regulations in relation to social distancing. Bare in mind such things as :

  • overcrowding on Jetties and shorelines

  • not all piling into the one car at 5am as we normally would have in days gone by

  • and just practice some common sense as per www.health.gov.au
