Fishing Report – Sat 17th July 2021
Settled weather to finish the week sees anglers head out in search of deep water species…. Tuna and Striped Trumpeter.
Saltwater
Flounder spearing over the past week has been amazing with good sized flounder being taken right around our coastlines.
Sand Flathead continue to bite on the right day in deeper water -Fortescue, Tasman Island and Storm Bay and lower Bruny Island worth a try at the moment.
Calamari are building in numbers around the southeastern waters. Bright jigs are working in cooler winter waters. Triabunna, Mercury Passage and Marion Bay seeing good sized squid.
Snotty Trevally are available throughout the Channel and lower Huon Estuary these fish are being caught at night amongst schooling mackeral schools around jetties and rock structures.
Australian Salmon have been taken in good numbers around Cremorne and Clifton Beach – Halco 25 and 35gram Slice and Twisty lures are matching the hatch well imitating the many baitfish in the area presently.
Tiger Flathead are very scarce for the moment – these fish were making an appearance a few weeks back but seem to have been absent from anglers bag in the last week.
Morwong Perch are plentiful around the Peninsula and Schouten Island.
Striped Trumpeter continue their magic run of late with anglers taking fish from Pedra to Freycinet Peninsula further to the north. Some fish have reached the 10kg mark. Wider Storm Bay and The Friars have been good fish producers.
Southern Bluefin tuna were very quiet last weekend with only the occasional fish caught – midweek however saw a return of the action we had been used to on the Peninsula with fish to 28kg being caught on Wednesday and again yesterday. Tasman Island Hippolytes and Fortescue the better areas.
Estuary
Both the Derwent and Huon estuaries have seen sea run trout activity increase significantly in recent days. Wet flies flicked around the edges has seen fish to 2kg landed. While both drift spinning and spinning form shore has seen good captures made. Size is still small but good fish have been lost.
Large Atlantic Salmon have been seen cruising rocky shorelines around Lindisfarme and Geilston Bays.
Bream continue to slam both lure and fly and are feeding in the same areas as the sea run trout.
Freshwater
Craigebourne Dam is still producing nice fish for the moment and is spilling. A report of a 5kg brown trout a few weeks back came to light during the week. A slowly stripped wet fly such as an Olive Shrek or Black and Red Woolley Bugger around the edges should work well. A Rapala Spotted Dog spun or trolled will also take fish in the semi murky water.
Great Lake sees more early morning frosts during the week but magic blue sky winters days following. This combined with water levels topping last years fish have eagerly hit lures and fly over the last 7 days. Bait fishers continue to do well using wattle grubs and Scrub worms fished close to the bottom on a running rig.
Good luck this weekend.
