Fishing Report

Anglers battle bouts of bad weather but seem to be getting out and catching good bags of both fresh and saltwater species.

Saltwater

SBT have gone quiet for the moment around the Peninsula but seem to still be available further south around Pedra Blanca.

Tiger Flathead are starting to move around our local coastlines, good spots include Marion Bay, lower Mercury Passage and Storm Bay.

Sand Flathead are reasonably plentiful in most areas. The Channel is still a little slow due the large amounts of freshwater.  Lewisham area is producing good sized fish in close to soft plastics. Adventure Bay too producing the goods.

Australian Salmon are now running well from Dover to Bicheno with schools being encountered up to 2.7kg. Many schools around Cremorne and Carlton are averaging about 1kg.

Perch are now plentiful and biting in 70m of water over rocky bottom. Fortescue Bay seems to holding healthy numbers of these fish. Fresh squid bait being the best.

Sand Whiting are in big numbers around the shallower sandy bays indicating the spring run has begun.

Calamari are available in small numbers around the coast. Local jetties are struggling a tad as freshwater is keeping these fish out wide for the moment. Boaters are experiencing better results in deeper water.

Estuary

Seatrout are slowing after an extended run this year – a run seeing them bite well into late November. Fish are still available but mainly upriver. Whitebait is still dominating the feeding patterns.

Bream are arriving in the mid reaches of the Derwent and Huon estuaries. These fish are taking bait, lure and fly. Browns River is seeing fish move in over the beach and beginning to gather inside the river. A fresh prawn bait working well.

Freshwater

Arthurs Lake shows small glimmers of hope with some anglers finding good patches of fish and others dipping out.

Great Lake is now the highest it’s been in many years and trout have moved in over newly flooded ground. This area up until recently had been too cold but in recent days has warmed significantly allowing fish to forage effectively in these zones.

Bronte Lagoon has started to drop and tailing action that had been constant has now slowed. Trollers and spin fishers have experienced good bags and fish to 2kg.

Penstock Lagoon with fish now taking the dry fly on the right day. Duns have been popping up for a weeks now.

Woods Lake is firing with all methods working well.

Tommy Darke with a nice Tungatinah fish

The best of several Arthurs fish. The average size is good this year.
