Rhys Long with an Arthurs fish

The fishing is really starting to heat up and with Christmas is just around the corner, It’s the perfect time of year to start planning a few trips.

Freshwater

Lake Crescent - big fish continue to be caught with less people on the lake now is a good time to go and try your luck at a trophy brown

Bronte Lagoon – good numbers of fish early morning on the fly tailing and midging around the edges, few fish rising to caddis and mayfly during the day.  Lure fisherman are having great success trolling out wide and drift spinning some of the deeper shores.

Arthurs Lake - good numbers of fish continuing to come out of Arthurs Lake with all fish in great condition and a good mix up sizes up to 5lb being caught.  Drift spinning rocky shores and working plastics in amongst the trees are proving to be very productive, while fish have been spotted eating mayflies and midge in some of the shallower bays.

Little Pine Lagoon - has been a little quite of late, fish are in great condition but proving rather hard to catch.

Penstock - Fish have been coming up to duns on the right day but don’t seem to be staying up long and people have been reporting a large algae type bloom on parts of the lake making polaroiding quite hard. Despite this fish have been in incredible condition and people have been managing some reasonable bags.

Woods Lake - Woods lake has been on fire lately with people reporting large numbers of fish being caught on all methods. The average size seems to be quite small for woods with fish ranging from around 1-3lb.  Fish have been caught cruising the edges on mayfly patterns, drift spinning with presso 6f lure and trolling the middle with double clutch 65s.

Salt Water

Australian Salmon
Good numbers have been about over the last week or so. Cremorne, Derwent River and around Bull Bay have seen large schools feeding readily on the surface.

Tailor
Tailor have still been about in the Derwent at the moment. Around the Tasman Bridge, Regatta grounds and Battery Point seem to be really good spots to come across the fish. They have mostly have been a bycatch while fishing for salmon.

Bream
The upper Derwent and Huon are seeing good numbers of smaller bream caught on bait, lure and Fly. Large schools have been seen and caught as they spawn. Best to catch and release at this time of year.

Flathead
Anglers are having to work fairly hard to get a feed of late, numbers and sizes have been a little patchy.

Tuna
Pedra Branca and Mewstone have been fishing extremely well with good numbers of large school Bluefin mixed in with larger models.  A few smaller Bluefin around the 10kg starting to be caught as well. Around Eagle Hawk has been very quiet on the Tuna front.

Calamari
Some good squid have been caught over the last few weeks. Adventure Bay, Triabunna and Dennes Point have been very productive.

Snapper
A few Snapper are starting to be reported, one angler catching several smaller models around Pirates Bay and another report of a few caught of the Margate Jetty.

Striped Trumpeter
Fishing has been fairly consistent over the last few weeks; the fish have been in varied depths of water.  Anglers that have been actively searching on different structure and depths have done the best.

Mako
A few Makos are starting to be seen and one angler reported a Malo attacking a Tuna boat side. With currents starting to push down we should see some more turning up.

Blue Eye Trevalla
Some really good-sized fish caught of late and numbers seem to be fairly consistent. Would be good to see this continue into the new year.

Crayfish
The east coast stock rebuilding zone opened on the weekend and with some beautiful weather a lot of anglers got out to set their pot or go for a dive.  Most report very good captures with a lot of fish well and truly size even with the new size limits.

Remember to please send in photos to info@spotonfishinghobart.com.au of your catches so we can feature your catch.
