Tasmanian Fishing Report 17/07/2020

Milder weather has allowed anglers to venture forth in recent days encountering some exceptional catches in both the fresh and the salt.

Saltwater

Snotty Trevally
Reports of good numbers of fish around north Bruny, Betsy Island and further up the river of this tasty table fish. Size has ranged from .5kg to 1.2kg. Try Port Huon and Margate as well.

Striped Trumpeter
Pedra, Schouten, Bicheno have all been hot spots lately for getting these amazing table fish with fresh bait being the key to success.

Bluefin Tuna
Have been a bit slow with the easterly weather patterns. Jumbos have become more prevalent this week.

Sand Flathead
Reports of good-sized sand flathead up around Swansea lately. The channel area remains fairly quiet for flathead.

Calamari
Good sized fish have been reported from around Coles Bay.

Flounder
Breezeless nights have once again been perfect for chasing these great table fish with anglers reporting good numbers still about. Make the most of the early darkness at this time of the year.

Estuary

Sea runners
Some good-sized fish have been caught between Bridgewater and new Cadbury’s Point in the last week with anglers reporting large numbers of bait throughout the river.

Freshwater

Great Lake
Has stood out in recent weeks milder days allowing both boating and shore-based angling. Some lovely fish have been caught – two that we know of nudging 4lb. Soft plastic and cobra style lures being the go-to by most. Fly fishers have done well patrolling the edges with a woolley bugger pattern …. Fish on the many calm days have been seen midging offshore.
