Tasmanian Fishing Report - 22 April 2021

Saltwater

Albacore – good numbers of big albacore continue to be caught inshore at eagle hawk neck

Bluefin tuna – are being caught in big numbers at eagle hawk neck in a range of sizes from 8kg – 142kg with a good mixture of school sized fish 20-40kg being prevalent.  Halcos are working well with the school fish while Zacatak, JB and Meridian lures are accounting for the bigger models.

Calamari – Big calamari are showing up on the east coast.  Inside Maria is going well with yamashita jigs proving to be everyone’s favorite choice.

Yellowfin tuna – continue to torment people at eagle hawk neck with random singular fish being caught. Get out there while you can as temperatures are starting to drop and these fish won’t hang around for too much longer.

Kingfish – seem to have disappeared for now with no reports lately and big drops in water temperatures.

Bream – continue to fire in the Derwent River and Browns River with good numbers of sized fish being caught.

Snapper – good reports still flowing in from Snapper in Storm Bay and Frederick Henry Bay fresh bait and a good burley trail is doing the trick.

Cod – seems to be on all inshore reefs at the moment with anglers reporting they can’t get away from them.  These are mostly being caught as bycatch.

Swordfish – are being caught when breaks in the weather allow people to get out wide.

Flounder – good numbers are being speared now that it is getting darker earlier and it is worth going for a look if you get a good calm night.

Freshwater

Trout – are coming to an end with not much left of the Brown trout season – only 10 days to go.

Great Lake is fishing well with anglers getting good numbers spinning and flicking a wet fly around the edges. Spinning using an Ashley spinner No 14D,23 or phantom.

East coast lakes Leake and Tooms have also been firing with reports of good numbers of quality browns and rainbows being caught.

Bronte Lagoon fished well last weekend with lures. Trolled cobras and spun bibbs tricking most fish.

Little Pine has bee drained virtually dry over the last week, if headed there this weekend perhaps consider diverting to Great Lake, Woods or Bronte.
