Fishing Report – 18th April 2021

Great Autumn fishing action in both the fresh and salt continues over recent days with another Yellowfin Tuna to 80kg turning up off the Peninsula this week.

Saltwater

Albacore along the east coast have slowed a little but Cape Pillar, Cape Roule and Tasman Island… smaller 8-10kg fish are in the vicinity of The Hippolyte’s.

Occasional Striped Tuna are still being caught.

Southern Bluefin have still been caught in the 80 -100kg bracket fish caught at The Monkeys at Tasman Island this week. Fish have been encountered anywhere from EHN to Cape Pillar.

Yellowfin tuna are still on the Peninsula … these fish are a bit hit and miss but still should be a strong proposition while the water temperature remains 17 degrees or above.

Snapper are still running in Storm Bay and Channel areas - fish size still seems to be around 1-2kg.

Yellowtail Kingfish are now a little bit patchy in most areas although fish are still being encountered in known spots – fish have been taken by those trolling for tuna.

Sand Flathead continue to bite well off Marion Bay and Nth Maria.

Sea trout are still making an appearance in the Derwent and Huon rivers with fish being taken spinning and trolling mainly in the lower reaches around Cradoc and Old Beach.

Atlantic Salmon are still available throughout the Huon and Derwent estuaries.

Black Bream continue to bite in the lower Derwent estuary with soft plastics and fly working well.

Sand whiting are around in numbers and being caught off nearly every jetty in southern Tasmania – South Arm and Lewisham area fishing well for the moment.

Calamari are available around Betsy Island, Tiger Head, and Chinamans Bay on Maria Island. Coastal jetties in the channel are a good option too.

Barracouta are prevalent around the SE coastline – trolling and spinning accounting for most fish. Mature fish are available in the south.

Makos biting well in general but a little slow this week.

Garfish are now turning up and being taken throughout the Channel and Storm Bay areas. Dodges Ferry producing fish during the week.

Australian Salmon are available at Cremorne and Southport to 1.5kg – Halco 30grm Silver Slice lures taking the majority of fish.

Freshwater

The brown trout season winds to an end on Sunday May 2nd with 95% of our lakes and nearly 100% of our rivers closing for 3 months. IFS reports trout beginning to spawn at Great Lake already. Rainbow waters will remain open for approximately another month after this.

Great Lake is still producing nice browns and rainbow trout to 2kg. April fishing on this water can be incredibly before.  Troll and spin fishers seeming to be the best option. Fly is a quietening off a tad but a walk flicking a wet along the shore normally productive.

Lake Leake fished well again last weekend, spin and troll working well.

Bronte Lagoon has produced fish to the fish over the last 7 days but conditions have been wild. Troll and spin fishers taking fish as well on cobra and bib styled.

Woods Lake has come on line with lure fishers over the last 10 days with some nice fish reported.

Tooms Lake is murky after two recent rains but relatively full but fishing quiet.

Tyenna River is producing well-conditioned brown trout to the Nymph mainly. Heavier patterns working well.

Local angler Harry Ross with his 85kg Yellowfin Tuna caught in recent days off Eaglehawk Neck on a Halco Laser Pro 190 DD in H70 or King Brown colour.

The “Cod Master“, Rob Green with a Trophy Rock Cod caught recently. 😆

Trout whisperer Streaty with a nice little Bronte fish caught trolling a Rapala brown trout patterned CD5.
