Fishing Report 17 Jan 2020

Firstly apologies for the tardiness for the fishing report of late - it has been manic in the shop over xmas. The new year, however, brings with it all the fish species we were so waiting to see arrive late last year.

Saltwater

Southern Bluefin
Tuna arrive in style last week almost invading SE coastlines fish were caught inside Adventure Bay, Fortescue and Pirates Bay and at the usual spots such as The Hippolyte Rocks and Tasman Island.

One report has a fish hooked fought and lost after 15mins from a jetty inside George's Bay at St Helens.

SBT extend from the S to the NE tip becoming thicker the further N you go.

Albacore
have been available on the shelf off Bicheno for about a fortnight now with some fish up around the 8kg mark.  A splattering of fish have been caught further S behind Maria Island and Eaglehawk Neck.

Kingfish
are abundant on the shelf and have been caught in North West Bay for a bit over 2 weeks as well. Temperatures have triggered fish into having a crack at soft and hardbody lures. Numerous sightings have been made in the Derwent and unconfirmed captures.

Tiger Flathead
have stolen the limelight in recent weeks wuh fish up to 700mm being regularly caught along the SE and E coasts.

Sand Flathead
have proven to be patchy with many undersize fish being landed between sized specimens. Persistence being key.

Australian Salmon
are very quiet but available with a little searching ... Cremorne being a dependable location.

Slimy Mackerel
are available from most coastal  jetty’s presently ... Jack Mackeral mixed in with these as well.

Barracouta
from small to medium sized have been caught in Storm Bay by those trolling for salmon and SBT.   Bream are a little quiet.

A good haul of Xmas holiday crays by Andrew Large

Plenty of small calamari about around Bruny and Tasman Peninsula

We have plenty of sluggos (Kingfish slayers) in stock.

Freshwater

Great Lake
continues to give up some above average size brown and rainbow trout ... best lure here for the moment seems to be the Jazz 70mm hard body lure in either Black and Gold or Natural Trout.

Lake Burbury
has fished well on the fly using dry mudeye patterns early in the morning in the wind slicks ... rainbows to 1.5kg taken last week.

Lake Leake
fishing well on cooler days. Spinning from a boat along the many shorelines producing quality rainbows and browns.

Woods Lake
is becoming progressively harder to fish as the water level drops for the season. Fly fisherman have found the lower level near perfect in and around the river mouth to the SW. Duns and Black Spinners tricking the odd fish.
