Saltwater

Southern Bluefin
are thick out of EHN and Fortescue Bay over the last 7 days … although a few quite days Mon Tues left everyone wondering where they were. Hot spots include Hippolyte Rocks and Tasman Island ….. in a recent Spot On Light Line Competition run through the Tuna Club of Tasmanian saw fish ranging from 8kg to 25kg.

Albacore
are mixed in with the SBT which is great news at the moment which means the one lure set should work well on both species. Albacore have been caught to 23kg with most at the moment averaging somewhere 4-6kg. The water wide of the Hippolytes along the 110m contour is fishing when most other spots are quiet.

Sand Flathead
are for the moment continuing to bite well although a little searching may be needed to find healthy beds of good fish.

Tiger Flathead
are being caught on occasion in deeper 70m plus water …. This spring and early summer species is tapering off a little.

Calamari are returning to inshore areas – size has been up a little as juvenile fish seen over Christmas are approaching maturity. Woodbridge and Margate areas in the Channel are fishing well.

Arrow Squid
are being encountered by those anglers trying for Sword Fish and those fishing closer inshore for flathead. Storm Bay and Peninsula waters seem to be producing consistent results.

King Fish
continue to taunt anglers …. The good news is a few have been caught on soft plastics, stick baits and surface popper style lures. Try a Halco Roosta Popper 80mm or 105mm lure. Kingfish have been taken by anglers trolling for tuna around structure in the past week. Again a Halco Laser Pro 120mm DD for best results.

Freshwater

Woods Lake
has slowed for spinning and trolling however fly activity and fisherman have been pleased over the last week with good fish being taken on red tags, gum beetles and dun patterns.

Great Lake
is producing fish to all methods. Bait fisherman are doing well with worms off the shore. Trollers are also catching their fair share of fish as well – cobras style lures are working well particulary Tassie Devil 126 – Smashing Pumpkin and Tillins King Cobra - Eucumbene.

Arthurs Lake
is producing fish to lure and fly ….. it’s not back to its former glory but worth a visit for the patient angler as some good bags can be had. Fly fisherman have done well floating a shaving brush along the edge of timber stands while spin fisherman have done well spinning into these. Trolling is taking fish but not as much as searching the timber with lure and fly.

River fish: The lower reaches of the Tyenna have been fishing well.

On the fly: Falling to a black nymph

Unusual: One of about 100 sea slugs (or snails???) washed up at Bruny last weekend

Squid rings: A few good calamari can be found amongst the smaller ones at the moment
