Fishing Report 26/2/2020

Last weekend saw challenging and not forecast weather conditions that tested both fresh and saltwater anglers……

Saltwater

SBT were a little quiet over the weekend some good catches were made over the shelf well east of the Hippolyte Rocks and Tasman Island. However, Monday saw fish back inshore in good numbers.

Albacore are still around over the shelf for the moment …. A big temperature drop last week saw fish move.

Australian Salmon have appeared again, undoubtedly because of the cooling water. Some monster salmon are available along surf beaches on the east coast – best caught on a squid strip flicked into the surf breaks or a 40grm Halco silver slice lure.

Kingfish have been highly active in the Derwent river with 5 to 6 fish caught during the middle of the day on Fri, Sat and Sunday. Again Halco 50 and 70grm gold Twisty lures taking fish. Fish have been seen in good numbers in North West Bay but are proving difficult to catch.

Snapper reports have been received from Dover and Whale Head areas. Fish have been caught wide in Storm Bay as well. Bait seems to be working the best. A group of customers recently caught fish on Black Magics Snapper Snack rigs in the larger size.

Sand Flathead are patchy but still biting well when found.

Arrow squid are available from Bicheno to the southern tip of Bruny Island …. One lucky group of boaters finding them in the Derwent River off Taroona.

Calamari are returning as water cools off a little.

Bream are thick in the Derwent at the moment with the Tasmanian bream classic held on the weekend anglers found good numbers of fish in the smaller size bracket with a few bigger models thrown in the mix

Freshwater

Pine Tier Lagoon fished well last weekend …. Small flashy bibbed minnows such as the 55mm Jazz “black and gold” or the Strike Tiger Flatz Minnow 65mm in Ghost Perch (A68) and Purple Trout (A142-264).

Great Lake still produced fish but was a little slow. Trolling seemed to be the most productive. While fly activity seemed non-existent.

Woods Lake fished well to those wading the edges. Spinning with an Ashley 14D or 29 taking trout for 1 lucky angler. Fly activity was a little better here and fish could be seen mopping up in the slicks just on twighlight.

Feature Product

Customers have now realised the specially designed Black Magic Snapper Snack rigs are working in our waters and on our fish …. These rigs have been available for 2-3 years with a larger size and 5 colours available this season. Tip add a piece of squid tentacle to the hook for an extra bit of attraction if need be …. These rigs do work very well on their own though.

Shhhhh ……. Just a little secret these also work well on Striped Trumpeter.
