Great Lake - Winter Solstice Competiton

The past weekend saw us head to the highlands for Joe’s annual Winter solstice comp. This event historically revolves itself around the pub at Miena and of course its rather warm fire, geared primarily as a social gathering, we also do a little fishing as well.

We all hit the lake around 10…actually 11am, after a freezing -8 degrees camped in tents.

The Great Lake proved challenging with a large part remaining frozen for most of the day. We trolled the extent of the southern shoreline including Todds Corner and Swan Bay, fishing slow and deep with a mixture of cobras and bibbed style lures.

Fishing was tough, the occasional rising brown trout teased the two boats but reminded us all why we were there.

In the end our trolling, spinning and deep lead-lining efforts were to no avail and both teams returned back to the ramp with zero fish and numb extremities.

But hey it was it was a great day on the water, with great mates telling stories, and we all cant wait to return next year. We hope you enjoy the awesome scenery shots from Sam Shelley.
